The Last Day

We had a very fun day today. It was our last day before the break. In the morning we had an all-school dance. The Grade One class had so much fun! We then played some games, and did an activity book. In the afternoon we had treats and watched "How the Grinch Stole Christmas".

Remember to work on your Holiday Homework book over the break. If you bring it back you will get a prize!

Have a Very Merry Christmas Grade One!!!!!

La Befana

Today we visited Italy!! We are having so much fun learning about Christmas celebrations around the world. We saw alot of neat things in Italy. We saw many Nativity scenes. They were set up at all the churches, and in the yards of most homes. There were street performers, bonfires, and even fireworks to celebrate.

We learned about La Befana, a tiny old women dressed in balck riding a broomstick. She delivers gifts in baskets. Do you remember the story of La Befana?

Today we took a trip to Sweden! We learned all about how they celebrate Christmas there. They leave out rice pudding instead of cookies. They start to celebrate 4 weeks before Christmas. Our favorite Advent calendars are very popular there. (We love chocolate!)

Weaving is very popular in Sweden. We really enjoyed weaving our own Christmas tree ornaments.

Here is a Christmas tree decoration that we weaved.

Today we traveled to Mexico. We talked about Christmas celebrations in this country. We learned that Merry Christmas in Spanish is "Feliz Navidad". We learned that children leave their shoes out on January 5th to recieve presents from the Wise Men, who were looking for baby Jesus. There are lots of parties that happen at Christmas time!

We also learned about the legend of the poinsettia (which originated as a weed in Mexico). We made poinsettia placemats! We had so much fun visiting Mexico.

We took a trip today! We had our passports in hand, and off we went. We arrived in France at about 2:30 this afternoon! What a great day to visit France. Everyone was in the Christmas spirit. We even recieved presents for St. Nicholas Eve! (Which was today Dec. 6th). We saw some very interesting sights. The children don't leave a stocking out for Pere Noel (Santa), but they leave shoes by the fire. They hope that Pere Noel will fill them with gifts. We also saw many Nativity scenes. We had a wonderful trip and hope to visit France again.

There were alot of spils and falls, but we all had a great time. Thank you so much to the parents who took us to and from the rink, your help was very much appreciated.
